Women's soccer team wins, hosts Detroit Sunday
Sept. 1, 2000
KALAMAZOO -- WMU's women's soccer team opened the 2000 campaign
with a 3-2 victory over Valparaiso at the WMU Soccer Complex
on Friday (Sept. 1). Women's soccer is one of seven Bronco teams
that open their 2000 seasons during the long Labor Day weekend,
and the only one hosting contests in Kalamazoo.
Western Michigan will try to improve to 2-0 on the year, when
it hosts Detroit in a 2 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 3) match. The contest
will be played at the WMU Soccer Complex, located on Parkview
Avenue near the intersection with Drake Road. Admission is free.
In Friday's victory over Valparaiso, the Broncos jumped out
to a early 2-0 lead on goals by Cindy Webber and Megan Urbats,
but Valparaiso responded to knot the score at 2-2. Mary Gignac
broke the deadlock with a goal in the 86th minute of play to
give WMU the 3-2 win. Urbats, a freshman, had an outstanding
collegiate debut with one goal and two assists for a total of
four points.
