Women's soccer team is perfect, 3-0 MAC

KALAMAZOO -- WMU's women's soccer team is undefeated and has not allowed a goal in the first three matches of its 2000 MAC schedule.
On Sunday afternoon (Sept. 24) at the WMU Soccer Complex, the Broncos defeated Miami, 2-0, on goals by sophomore Mary Gignac and freshman Jessica Pattison. Sophomore Amber Scyphers had an assist on both goals.
The victory was the third straight shutout of a MAC opponent and fourth consecutive shutout overall for the Broncos, a record for the 5-year-old varsity program. The Broncos also have played a school-record 374 minutes without allowing a goal.
Megan Ramey became the program's first goalkeeper to record four consecutive shutouts. In Sunday's record-setting contest, Ramey faced 19 shots on goal and made nine saves.
Western Michigan improved to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos are tied for the conference lead with Ohio and Bowling Green. Both are also 3-0 in MAC competition.
On Friday (Sept. 22) in Kalamazoo, WMU defeated Ball State, 2-0, on goals by junior Gretchen Markey and freshman Cindy Webber. Scyphers, Gignac and Webber were each credited with an assist in the win.
The Broncos opened their MAC schedule on Sept. 17 with a 1-0 shutout at Northern Illinois. It was the Broncos' first-ever win at NIU.
Western Michigan continues MAC competition at home with a 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, match versus Toledo. The Broncos travel to Bowling Green on Sunday, Oct. 1, before returning to the WMU Soccer Complex for their final two home matches of the regular season. WMU hosts Kent State on Oct. 6 and Buffalo on Oct. 8.
