Sales and Business Marketing

Western Michigan University is one of just a handful of universities that offer a major focusing on selling and sales management. We have been recognized since 2007 as having one of the “Top University Sales Programs” by the Sales Education Foundation, and ranked No. 2 in the “Top U.S. Sales Schools” by Education Portal.

Our sales and business marketing program will prepare you to excel in entry-level sales positions and provide the broader framework for future success in upper-level management. We have small class sizes and a hands-on, experiential learning philosophy, and our sales and business marketing faculty all have real-world experience in sales and sales leadership.

If you choose to major in sales and business marketing at WMU, you will spend a significant amount of time in the Harold Zeigler Interactive Sales Lab, one of the best university sales learning facilities in the nation. In this interactive digital lab, you will perform role-playing sales exercises in a realistic business setting.

Beyond the classroom

WMU's sales and business marketing students have had great success at a number of national sales competitions.

  • In 2012, we had the top individual student and finished second overall as a university in the State Farm Sales and Marketing Competition.
  • Our students have finished first or second overall twice in the last five years at the Russ Berrie National Sales Challenge.
  • Our students finished in the top-10 seven years in a row and placed in the top-5 five times at the National Collegiate Sales Competition.

As a sales and business marketing student at WMU, you will be urged to participate in these and other national sales competitions. You'll also be encouraged to join student organizations like the Sales and Business Marketing Association. With more than 100 members, it focuses on bringing employers and students together to develop networking and job opportunities.
