Application Procedures

Students interested in graduate study in the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University should follow the procedures outlined below. Although not required for admission, applicants are strongly encouraged to contact individual faculty to discuss similar research interests.

Deadline: Feb. 15 for fall admission
Students are only admitted for the Fall term of each year.

Visiting the Biological Sciences Department
If you would like to come and visit our Department to meet with faculty and view our facilities please contact Dr. Bruce Bejcek at

All students must submit the following:

Request official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended indicating that the applicant has:

  • Earned a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with an overall grade point average of at least 3.0
  • Taken appropriate courses in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics

Institutions that you previously attended should send your transcript(s) to:

Hand carried or student copies cannot be accepted. Official transcripts from all previous institutions must be received before your application can be considered for admission.

For all programs (M.A., M.S. and Ph.D.) you must take the Graduate Record Examination and have the scores for the verbal, quantitative and analytical sections sent from the Educational Testing Service to the WMU Office of Admissions (WMU institution code: 1902; Department code: 0299). 

Three recommendation letters from professors you have worked with or have had as instructors or other individuals you know on a professional basis need to be submitted to the Department of Biological Sciences:
