Sustainability has been defined as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs." This definition calls for business organizations to operate in a manner that values the well-being of stakeholders (customers, suppliers, employees and investors)in sustaining economic prosperity while also taking care of their employees and the environment. The core concept of sustainability seeks to encourage the adoption and implementation of practices that aim at the “triple bottom line:”

To promote sustainable business practices by all partners and stakeholders of the Haworth College of Business. Our students and their families, faculty and staff, alumni, university colleagues, business partners, non-profit organizations, and community representatives must examine current business and organizational practices and policies to help us achieve a sustainable world for future generations in the context of civilization at risk.
to create and disseminate information, concepts, knowledge and wisdom about global sustainable business practices as the planet faces the challenges of lack of resources, declining business ethics, and immediate questions related to globalization and its impact on the State of Michigan, the U.S. and the World in the 21st century.
