Student Employment policy
Sample Student Employment Policy Bench Marks
During Fall & Spring semesters:
- An undergraduate must be enrolled half-time or a minimum of 6 credits (a graduate must be enrolled 3 credit hours) each semester to be FICA exempt.
- Students may hold more than one campus job, but these positions together can equal no more than 30 hours per week, or 60 hours per pay period. Refer to Student Employee Definition.
- Student employees will be paid overtime for working over 40 hours in one week.
- Full-time enrolled international student employees may work up to 20 hours/week by DHS policy. Part-time enrolled or non enrolled international students are considered out of status and may not work on campus with the exception of students in their graduating semester (for part-time enrolled international students).
During Summer I & Summer II sessions:
- Students may hold more than one campus job, but these positions together must equal less than 30 hours/week or less than 60 hours per pay period. Enrolled international students may only work up to 20 hours/week.
- Student employees will be paid overtime for working over 40 hours in one week.
- A graduate student must be enrolled a minimum of 2 credit hours for FICA exemption. An undergraduate student must be enrolled 3 credit hours to be FICA exempt.
- A non-enrolled individual can work on campus in Summer I/Summer II and may work up to 40 hours/week. This includes non-enrolled international students. Refer to Student Employee Definition.
Break Periods:
- Student employees may work up to 40 hours/week as long as the break period is less than five weeks.
**In AFSCME work areas all student employees could be limited to work 20 hours/week during the year.**
- It is the responsibility of the employing department to monitor the enrollment status
and working hours of each student.
