The Office of Admissions and Orientation admits students to the Alpha Program who show academic promise but who do not meet the criteria for regular admission to WMU (either because of high school grades or ACT/SAT scores which are lower than regular admission requirements).
Our goal is to help Alpha students develop skills, behaviors and attitudes that lead to college success. We provide services to assist our students in meeting academic challenges and experiencing personal growth as they make the transition from high school to college.
If admitted through Alpha, a student will meet regularly with the Alpha coordinator, who will be the student's academic advisor during that freshman year. The coordinator helps the student not only select classes, but also learn of the many campus resources available (tutoring, counseling, career counseling, and many more).
Alpha students and their parents sign a contract as a condition of admission
that permits parents to contact the coordinator to find out how their
student is doing academically. On occasion the Alpha coordinator may contact
a parent, as well, regarding student progress.
