Undergraduate Civil Engineering Degree

The Department of Civil Engineering offers undergraduate degree programs in Civil Engineering.

Program Educational Objectives

The objectives of the civil engineering program at Western Michigan University are to have graduates:

1. Use engineering fundamentals and critical thinking skills to contribute to their profession.

2. Demonstrate leadership responsibilities.

3. Continue their education through life-long learning opportunities, graduate studies, and/or self study.

4. Who are professionally recognized by becoming registered engineers.

Student Outcomes

The program prepares students who:

a. Understand and are able to apply knowledge of traditional mathematics, science, and engineering skills.

b. Are able to design and conduct experiments, as well as analyze and interpret data in more than one Civil Engineering discipline.

c. Can design systems, components, and processes to meet desired needs.

d. Can work in design teams.

e. Are able to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.

f. Understand professional and ethical responsibility.

g. Are able to communicate effectively.

h. Understand the impact of engineering on society.

i. Understand and embrace the need for a life-long learning.

j. Have knowledge of contemporary issues.

k. Can use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering.
