What is MGRRE?

Core LabThe Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education (MGRRE), pictured to the right, houses the state's most comprehensive collection of subsurface geological samples and data. The facility functions as a primary location for research and technology transfer related to water resources, petroleum geology, carbon dioxide sequestration and, in conjunction with other faculty in WMU's geosciences department, environmental topics such as groundwater management and bluff erosion along the Great Lakes.

MGRRE’s educational activities include K-16 and post-graduate classroom training and public outreach in relation to natural resources and the environment.  MGRRE’s K-12 Outreach Program is called CoreKids.

The photo at left shows high school students examining salt cores from over 8,000 feet below central Michigan.
