Admissions to CEAS
Effective Fall Semester 2012, students, after they have been admitted by Western Michigan University, will be placed in Pre-Engineering, Pre-Engineering Technology or Computer Science, CEAS Exploratory, or Exploratory Advisory based on the following academic criteria. (The admissions requirements will apply to students admitted to the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences to begin academic study in Fall Semester 2012).
High School Students
Pre-Engineering or Pre-Engineering Technology Admission Criteria
- Pre-Engineering or Pre-Engineering Technology: High school students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology will be eligible for admission to the Pre-Engineering or Pre-Engineering Technology curriculum when they have an ACT-MATH score of 24 or higher (SAT-MATH 560 or higher), in addition to meeting the admissions requirement to Western Michigan University.
- CEAS Exploratory: High school students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology with ACT-MATH score of 19 to 23 (SAT-MATH 460-559) will be admitted to CEAS Exploratory. Upon successful completion of Algebra II (or equivalent) with a grade of 3.0 or higher in no more than two attempts, the student may apply for admission to the Pre-Engineering or Pre-Engineering Technology curriculum.
- Exploratory Advising: High school students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology with ACT-MATH score of 18 or lower (SAT-MATH 459 or lower) will be admitted to Exploratory Advising. Upon successful completion of Algebra II (or equivalent) with a grade of 3.0 or higher in no more than two attempts, the student may apply for admission to the Pre-Engineering or Pre-Engineering Technology curriculum.
Computer Science Admission Criteria
- Computer Science: To be eligible for admission to the Computer Science curriculum, the student must have an ACT-MATH score of 19 or higher (SAT-MATH 460 or higher), in addition to meeting the admissions requirement to Western Michigan University.
- Exploratory Advising: High school students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in Computer Science with ACT-MATH score of 18 or lower (SAT-MATH 459 or lower) will be admitted to Exploratory Advising. Upon successful completion of Algebra I (or equivalent) with a grade of 3.0 or higher in no more than two attempts, the student may apply for admission to the Computer Science curriculum.
Transfer Students
Pre-Engineering or Pre-Engineering Technology Admission Criteria
- Pre-Engineering or Pre-Engineering Technology: Transfer students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering and engineering technology will be eligible for admission to the Pre-Engineering or Pre-Engineering Technology curriculum when they have completed the WMU equivalent of Algebra II (MATH 1110) with a grade of B or higher, or the WMU equivalent of Pre-Calculus (MATH 1180), or Calculus I (MATH 1220/1700), or Calculus II (MATH 1230/1710) with a grade of C or higher, in addition to meeting the admissions requirement to Western Michigan University.
- CEAS Exploratory: Transfer students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology but have not completed the WMU equivalent of Algebra II (MATH 1110) with a grade of B or higher will be admitted to CEAS Exploratory. Upon successful completion of Algebra II (or equivalent) with a grade of B or higher in no more than two attempts, the student may apply for admission to the Pre-Engineering or Pre-Engineering Technology curriculum.
- Exploratory Advising: Transfer students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology and have completed only the WMU equivalent of Algebra I (MATH 1100) or completed the WMU equivalent of Algebra II (MATH 1110) with a grade below B from the transferring college will be admitted to Exploratory Advising. Upon successful completion of Algebra II (or equivalent) with a grade of B or higher in no more than two attempts, the student may apply for admission to the Pre-Engineering or Pre-Engineering Technology curriculum.
Computer Science Admission Criteria
- Computer Science: To be eligible for admission to the Computer Science curriculum, the transfer student must have completed the WMU equivalent of Algebra I (MATH 1100) with a grade of B or higher from the transferring college, in addition to meeting the admissions requirement to Western Michigan University.
- Exploratory Advising: Transfer students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in Computer Science but have not completed the WMU equivalent of Algebra I (MATH 1100) with a grade of B or higher from the transferring college will be admitted to Exploratory Advising. Upon successful completion of Algebra I (or equivalent) with a grade of B or higher in no more than two attempts, the student may apply for admission to the Computer Science curriculum.
- Transfer students can appeal their CEAS admission status, which will be determined by a committee chaired by the CEAS Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and Assessment.
