Goo

                           Materials:

·             Corn starch

·             small pan

·             water

·             spoon for stirring

·             food coloring (if desired)

                           Experiment:

1.        Add some corn starch and water in pan and stir.

2.        Continue adding materials until it reaches a thick consistency, such as mayonnaise, and you have a layer in the pan about an inch thick.

3.        Does it remain stirrable or pourable?  Slap the goo with the flat of your hand?  Does it splatter out of the pan?

4.        Try to squeeze into a ball.

                            Physical Property terms:

*             Melting Point

*             Boiling point

*             Freezing point

*             motion of molecules in a solid

*             motion of molecules in a liquid

*             solubility

*             diffusion

*             shear forces

*             blunt forces

*             viscosity

*             flowable

*             motion of molecules in vapor

You could set up the terms and then list definitions in another column not in the correct order to have students match the two together.

Then ask the students what terms apply to this experiment.
