Statement of Purpose

All applicants must submit a statement of purpose on the following topic: Write a 750-1000 word essay in which you discuss key experiences that have encouraged you to pursue graduate study. We want you to reflect carefully upon the ideas, texts, and approaches that inspire you. If there are specific aspects of your application that require explanation (low grades or low GRE scores, for instance) or if there are other achievements such as publications or awards that you would like to highlight, you may integrate them into your essay.

GRE Scores

The GRE General Test is required for all applicants. The GRE Subject Test is required for all Ph.D.-level applicants. Scores should be sent to WMU.

Letters of Recommendation

Please submit three (3) letters of recommendation. Download the cover sheet from the Department’s website and follow the instructions. Recommenders should print out their letters on their university or employer letterhead, sign across the back of the envelopes, and send them to the applicant. The applicant should include the letters in the application package.
