English Major: Arts and Sciences Curriculum
34 Credit Hours
I. Required entry-level course (4 credits)

1100: Literary Interpretation (4) (Prerequisite: grade of B in ENGL 1050, or equivalent)
II. Suggested elective course 2000-3000 level (3-4 credits)
Students are encouraged to elect the following courses:
- 2100: Film Interpretation(4)
- 2230: Black American Literature (4)
- 2520: Shakespeare (4), or
- 3150: The English Bible as Literature (3)
before taking courses in the "Required" part of the major.
III. Required courses (27-28 credits)
A. Three of the following four:
- 3200: American Literature I (3)
- 3300: British Literature I (3)
- 3210: American Literature II (3)
- 3310: British Literature II (3)
B. One of the following three:
- 3710: Structures of Modern English (4)
- 4720: American Dialects (4)
- 3720: Development of Modern English (4)
C. Two courses at the 4000-level, including at least one of the following four:
- 4150: Practical Literary Criticism (4)
- 4420: Studies in Drama (4)
- 4400: Studies in Verse (4)
- 4440: Studies in the Novel (4)
Students who use 4720 to satisfy requirement III.B may not use that course to satisfy this requirement.
D. At least two of the following courses:
- 4520: Shakespeare Seminar (4)
- 5360: Romantic Literature (3)
- 5220: Studies in American Literature (3)
- 5370: Victorian Literature (3)
- 5300: Medieval Literature (3)
- 5380: Modern Literature (3)
- 5320: Renaissance Literature (3)
- 5550: Studies in Major Writers (3)
- 5340: Restoration & 18th Century Literature (3)
Students who use 4520 to satisfy requirement III.C may not use that course to satisfy this requirement.
IV. Elective courses
At least one additional English course at the 2000, 3000, 4000, or 5000 level to complete the major unless an elective course has already been taken under II. above. The following courses cannot be used for this purpose: 1000, 1050, 1070, 1110, 1120, 3070, 3080, 3110 or 4800.
V. Foreign language requirement
Minimum of two semesters of a modern or classical foreign language at the college level, or two years of such study at the high school level. One year at the high school level coupled with the second semester of the same language at the college level is also satisfactory.
