Biography

Professor Egan currently is an Associate Professor teaching courses in American literature, Western World literature, the novel, and general education. His chief area of expertise is American fiction, but he has also published in the areas of pedagogy and advising. He earned his doctorate in English from the University of Kansas in 1980 and joined the WMU faculty in 1984. From 1999-2005 Professor Egan went into administration, serving as the Director of the Center for Academic Support Programs (CASP), where he was in charge of testing and placement of freshmen and the administration of remedial courses. Also reporting to him at that time were the University Curriculum (an advising unit for undeclared majors), the Academic Skills Center, the Writing Center, and the grant-funded Student Support Program. Both before and since his sojourn in administration, he has served as an advisor to undergraduate English majors; and, is currently the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies. Over the years he has published articles on American fiction in Studies in the Novel, American Literature, ATQ: American Transcendental Quarterly, University of Mississippi Studies in English, and Papers on Language and Literature. Two of his articles on pedagogy have appeared in College Teaching; and an article on the responsibilities of English advisors appeared in the CEA Critic and was recognized as one of the two "best articles of the year" by the journal's editors. He also has publications in the bibliography of American drama. Professor Egan belongs to the College English Association and regularly delivers papers at its national conferences. His teaching responsibilities have largely been in American literature and in general education courses including Western World Literature and Quest for Self.
