Ethics Bowl Regional Results!
The WMU Ethics Bowl team competed Dec. 3 in the Upper Midwest Regional Ethics Bowl at Oakland University. The team finished 2-2 after competing against the host school; last year’s regional champion, Bowling Green State University; and eventual national qualifiers Hiram College and University of Michigan. The other school that qualified for nationals was Loyola University at Chicago. The three teams advancing to nationals finished 4-0. WMU team members were: Kevin Barton of Jackson, a senior majoring in Film, Video & Media Studies; Matilda Burris of Portage, a junior majoring in Food and Consumer Package Goods Marketing;James Johnston of Jackson, a senior majoring in Philosophy with a minor in Economics; and Ian Lancaster of West Bloomfield, a freshman majoring in Philosophy and Political Science.
The regional competition comprised 12 institutions from Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Iowa. The Ethics Bowl competition is sponsored by the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics in March in Cincinnati. APPE is an international association dedicated to interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching in ethics.
The team’s coaches were David Charlton, Joshua Thomas, James M Wroblewski, and Joshua Upson. “Our team distinguished itself against some tough competition,” said the team’s faculty sponsor, Sandra L. Borden. “The judges were especially impressed with our critiques of the other teams, twice giving us a perfect score for that portion of the competition.” Borden is a Professor of Communication and Co-Director of WMU’s Center for the Study of Ethics in Society.
WMU has competed in the Ethics Bowl contest every year since it expanded from an intramural event at the Illinois Institute of Technology to a small regional contest involving a handful of colleges in 1994 (an event WMU won). Ethics Bowl now involves more than 100 schools from around the country. This year’s national championship will be March 1 in Cincinnati. WMU was the regional champion in 2006 and 2007 and placed in the top 10 nationally in 1998, 2000, 2008 and 2009. The team is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Ethics and Society. Tryouts are held every spring semester.
