Grants

WMU participates in several grant programs. Grants are typically for undergraduate students with significant financial need and do not need to be repaid. To determine eligibility for grant programs, you must file a FAFSA every year.

Pell

  • Federally funded (funding not limited).
  • Awarded to students with exceptional need per federal criteria.
  • Awarded by WMU as Federal Pell Grant on award notice.
  • Scheduled annual award amounts for full-time students beginning in 2016-17: minimum $582 maximum $5,815
  • Scheduled annual award amounts for full-time students beginning in 2015-16: minimum $626, maximum $5,775.
  • Scheduled annual award amounts for full-time students beginning in 2014-15: minimum $602, maximum $5,730.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate students.
  • First bachelor's degree.
  • Lifetime limit of six years eligibility, or the full-time equivalent of six years if attending less than full-time. See an example of how this rule works on the Department of Education website.
  • Award amount based upon estimated family contribution, enrollment status and enrollment period.

Supplemental educational opportunity

  • Federally funded (limited funding).
  • Need-based.
  • Awarded to students with exceptional need.
  • Funds may not be available for students who apply after April 1 for the upcoming aid year.
  • Award amounts at WMU: minimum $200, maximum $1,200.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate students.
  • First bachelor's degree.
  • Award eligibility based up estimated family contribution, enrollment and other resources.
  • Award amount adjusted or canceled if enrolled less than half-time.
  • Award may be adjusted or canceled if your EFC changes or you receive additional resources.

WMU

  • University funded (limited funding).
  • Need-based.
  • Funds may not be available for students who apply after March 1 for the upcoming aid year.
  • Award amounts: minimum $200, maximum $2,000.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate students.
  • Enrolled at least half-time.
  • Award eligibility based up estimated family contribution, academic merit, enrollment and other resources.
  • Award amount canceled if enrolled less than half-time.
  • Award may be adjusted or canceled if EFC changes or if you receive additional resources.
