Deadline approaching

The deadline for some endowed scholarships is Feb. 16, 2015. To be considered for an endowed scholarship for 2015-16, you must submit a 2015-16 FAFSA and select WMU using our school code, 002330, by Feb. 16, 2015. You must also complete and submit the endowed application by Feb. 16, 2015. Look through the list -- there are some scholarships with later deadlines.

These awards are made possible through endowments established by WMU's many generous donors over the years. Criteria & amounts vary by scholarship. An application is required. Most are due Feb. 16 for the following academic year. Look at each scholarship for specific details.

Robert M. Adelizzi Endowment

Eligibility

  • Preference given to students who reside in Illinois during initial application
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must maintain 3.0 GPA
  • Preference given to students who demonstrate leadership skills

Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church Scholarship Fund

Eligibility

  • Preference to students who are members of, or whose parents attend the Allen Chapel African Episcopal Church
  • Recipient should have demonstrated evidence of public service and volunteer service
  • Minimum 2.0 high school GPA
  • Must demonstrate financial need - FAFSA must be completed by May 1.

Mayor Dennis Archer Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate student
  • Detroit resident, or resident of Wayne, Oakland or Macomb counties
  • Major in Education, Public Administration or Pre-law programs
  • Minimum 3.0 high school GPA
  • Preference given to those with financial need
  • Evidence of public service/volunteer activities

Awards

  • $2000 per year annually
  • Renewable up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA at WMU

Lawrence, Clara & Evelyn E. Burke Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Full- or part-time graduate or undergraduate students enrolled in Theatre or Journalism
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Selected on the basis of scholastic achievement

Theatre students

  • Have participated in a theatre production either at the high school or college level
  • Are deemed to have outstanding potential for a career in theatre

Journalism students

  • Shall have had journalism experience, such as involvement with a school paper or yearbook, either at the high school or college level
  • Are deemed to have outstanding potential in the field of journalism

Award Amounts

  • Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis by the Theatre and Journalism Departments.  Amount varies year to year.

Alice Carpenter Warner Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Preference given to Michigan residents
  • Preference given to African American students
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Renewable for full-time undergraduate students making satisfactory academic progress

  • Award split evenly between fall and spring semesters

Christian Life Center Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Full-time undergraduate students
  • Preference given to students who attend or students whose parents attend Christian Life Center and who have had membership at Christian Life Center for at least 3 years
  • Minimum high school GPA of 3.0 average or WMU student who has maintained satisfactory academic progress
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Evidence of public service/volunteer service
  • Fall and spring semesters

Lynn H. Clark Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Must be a U. S. Citizen
  • Seniors at Centerville High School, St. Joseph, Michigan
  • Applied and accepted for undergraduate study at WMU
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 the last two years of high school
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Recipient selected by Centerville High School and they will notify Student Financial Aid.

Award

$600 ($300 fall/$300 spring) for one recipient per year (high school senior)

Julie Kaye Cunningham Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Graduating senior from Vicksburg High School
  • Will be attending WMU in the fall following their senior year of high school
  • Not based on financial need

In addition to the above, the Cunningham family would prefer, but does not require, the following:

  • Recipient be female
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Desire to excel
  • Active in sports
  • Puts extra effort and determination into tasks
  • Exemplifies good citizenship
  • Demonstrated ability to get along with others and be part of a team
  • Leadership ability

Recipient is selected by the Vicksburg High School Scholarship Committee.

Richard F. & Carolyn Curtis Chormann Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) by March 1
  • Application for admission to WMU received by Feb. 1
  • High school senior from Adrian High School
  • Awards will be based primarily on financial need
  • Recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 for renewal
  • Scholarship is renewable for up to four consecutive academic years
  • To maintain eligibility, students shall abide by the rules and regulations in the Student Code developed by the Division of Student Affairs
  • The scholarship will be reduced by the amount of any other known scholarship received by the recipient

Award

  • Amount shall pay for some or all of the educational expenses directly associated with attending WMU, including the cost of tuition, fees and on-campus room and board charges for the fall and spring semesters
  • Recipients must be full-time students at WMU during the period for which the scholarship funds are received

Galilee Missionary Baptist Church Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Full-time undergraduate at WMU
  • Preference given to students who attend or students whose parents attend Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and who have membership at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church for at least 3 yr.
  • Minimum high school GPA of 3.0 average or WMU student who has maintained satisfactory academic progress

Roy & Beulah Kendall Kellogg Community College Academic Merit Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Transfer to WMU from Kellogg Community College with an associate's degree or 56 credit hours
  • Transfer GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Application for admission into a degree granting program at WMU should be received by Feb. 16
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Award

  • $4,000 per year for two years (4 semesters at $2,000 per semester)
  • To retain the scholarship for the second year, student must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA and complete 12 credit hours per academic year.

Kendall Teacher Scholars Scholarship

Eligibility

General Criteria

  • This scholarship is available to applicants actively teaching full time in all Calhoun County schools, both public and private
  • Applicants must have a current State of Michigan teacher certification
  • This scholarship applies only to coursework offered through the Kendall Center
  • Awards are for tuition reimbursement only. Reimbursement authorizations will be processed upon receipt of proof of satisfactory completion of coursework at the end of each semester. Applicants are responsible for verification of grades with Kendall Center staff

Graduate Degree Candidates

  • Applicants must be admitted to or actively pursuing a graduate degree in K-12 education, and/or taking coursework approved by an (education) advisor, and appropriate to a degree directly related to K-12 teaching, counseling or administration
  • Applicants must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2, if there is no history of graduate work, to qualify for this scholarship
  • Applicants having completed some graduate work must show proof of a 3.5 GPA, to qualify for this scholarship
  • Once approved, recipients must maintain a 3.5 GPA to continue eligibility.   Renewal, however, is not automatic. Scholarship renewal applications are required each semester and will be evaluated for merit and applicability.
  • Only coursework receiving a 3.0 GPA or higher will be eligible for reimbursement

Award

Up to six student credit hours (SCH’s) will be reimbursed for any given semester, with no more than nine SCH’s reimbursed each academic year.

Formal application for  scholarships awarded for each academic semester must be received at the Kendall Center approximately five weeks prior to the start of each semester. Awards will be announced approximately two weeks prior to the official start of the semester.

Donald G. & Mildred E. Kidder Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Full-time, undergraduate students

LaGore Student Leadership Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Undergraduates involved in student government at WMU's Kalamazoo campus, elected or appointed.
  • Minimum 2.85 GPA at the time of application
  • Preference to students who demonstrate financial need
  • Full time enrollment
  • Award split evenly between fall and spring semesters
  • Renewable for undergraduate students, excluding Seniors, with a 2.50 GPA and must remain active in student government

Eligibility

  • Full-time, undergraduate students at WMU.
  • Renewable for a maximum of three years for freshmen, two years for sophomores and one year for juniors.
  • Must maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Amounts vary, paid in equal amounts fall and spring semesters only. Recipients selected by Student Financial Aid scholarship committee. No application is needed.

Eligibility

Students graduating from Benton Harbor High School, St. Joseph High School, and Lakeshore High School located in Berrien County, Michigan

Hubert & Dorthea Peckman Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Available to any student regardless of what course of study
  • First preference to students who are  Allegan County residents. If there are no applicants from Allegan County, the award goes to students from Southwest Michigan.
  • Must manifest an earnest desire for an education
  • Must have financial need and be willing to work for part of  their education funding
  • Preference shall be given to students who are from homes where one or both parents are deceased

Belinda S. Phillips Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Available to incoming freshmen who graduate from Decatur High School
  • Minimum high school GPA of 3.2
  • Selection will be made by the Decatur High School Scholarship Committee

  • Varies
  • Awards made during fall semester
  • Renewable for an additional three years if the student remains enrolled full-time, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0

Professional Development or Enrichment Programs

Eligibility

  • For applicants completing coursework as part of professional development or enrichment programs, appropriate to K-12 education.
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2. if there is no history of graduate work to qualify for this scholarship
  • Applicants having completed some graduate work must show proof of a 3.5 GPA

Award

  • Applications for tuition reimbursements for professional development coursework must be submitted by the official drop/add date established for the course.
  • Only coursework receiving a  3.0 GPA or higher will be eligible for reimbursement.
  • Car/NC courses are not eligible for reimbursement.

Application/Contact

  • Complete application – available at the Western Michigan University Kendall Center beginning January 1. The deadline is April 1
  • Attach a copy of State of Michigan teaching certificate
  • Provide a letter of recommendation from school district administrator
  • Complete a statement of no more than 250 words with your justification for taking the course(s) and noting the applicability of the coursework to your program and/or position. Include a statement of your philosophy of education & teaching.

Pete Repins Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Must be a junior or senior undergraduate student majoring in advertising, printing production, or graphics
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Preference shall be given to a student who demonstrates a strong commitment to the academic programs and professions of advertising, printing production, or graphics as well as related extracurricular activities such as work related experience, organization membership, etc.

  • Tuition, fees, and book expenses only
  • Renewable for a maximum of two consecutive years

Roy S. Roberts Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Must be enrolled full-time in a pre-business curriculum, or have a declared major in the Haworth College of Business.

  • Freshman and above students pursuing a four-year or less undergraduate degree

Marjorie Ewald Smith Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Must be from Van Buren County, Michigan

  • One-time award of $500

Joseph P. Stoltman Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Satisfactory progress toward one of the following degrees:
    • Bachelor of Arts in secondary education with a major in Geography or in Social Studies with a minor in Geography
    • Master of Arts in Geography for secondary education
    • Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education in Geography or Earth Science
    • Comparable educational specialization in a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in the Department of Geography should such a degree exist.
  • A minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the teaching and academic study of geography.

Awards

  • Award varies
  • Tuition only – half distributed during the fall semester and the other half during the subsequent semester
  • Recipients may reapply for this scholarship each academic year until completion of the degree following the same criteria listed above. 
  • If a recipient becomes academically deficient or violates any University policy the scholarship will be withheld and awarded to another qualified applicant the subsequent year.

Stanley/Helenan Robin Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Scholarship recipients are selected by the Political Science Department one year and the Sociology Department the next year
  • Must be in final semester of junior year
  • The award shall be made on the basis of:
    • Academic scholarship
    • Disciplinary and professional accomplishment
    • Assessed potential
    • Commitment to the field of Political Science or Sociology
  • Applicants must have enrolled at WMU as a freshman, and of their post secondary academic credits at the time of application, at least 4/5ths must have been completed at WMU
  • Applicants must state their intention to pursue graduate degrees in Sociology or Political Science at either WMU or elsewhere

Edwin Steffen Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be a high school senior from one of the following high schools: Arthur Hill High School, Decatur High School, L’Anse High School, or Saginaw High School
  • Based on academic criteria (minimum 3.0 GPA)
  • Preference given to applicants who show financial need
  • Consideration given to letters of recommendation (but are not required
  • Must apply for admission to WMU by Feb. 1

The Voelker Family Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Primary consideration given to students who have been five-year residents of Bedford Township, Michigan.
  • Secondary consideration given to students who have been five-year residents of Allegan, Barry or Calhoun Michigan counties.
  • U.S. Citizen
  • 3.0 GPA minimum and 2.0 GPA to renew
  • Renewable for up to four consecutive academic years
  • Financial need may be considered as secondary criteria
