Apply to the Graduate Program

Admission requirements

Applicants who possess a bachelor's degree with a major or minor in geography ot a related academic discipline such as social science, biological, engineering, health, business, or physical science majors may apply for admission in the Department of Geography at Western Michigan University. The application involves two steps:

  1. Complete the WMU online application process
  2. Send to department:
    • A copy of your purpose statement
    • A copy of your Bachelor of Science transcript(s)
    • Three letters of references
    • Graduate Record Examination score
    • International students should submit evidence of English language proficiency such as Test of English as a Foreign Language score to The Office of International Student Services following standard WMU procedures.

Admission dates

Admission to the Department of Geography is rolling. However, it is preferable that students apply by the following dates:

Feb. 28 - apply for assistantship

March 31 (preferred) - apply for fall (September) admission

Sept. 30 (preferred) - apply for spring (January) admission
