How to apply to WMU's graduate programs

To best meet the needs of our students, WMU uses a more decentralized approach for our graduate applications. In addition to a common university graduate application and transcript submission requirement, individual programs have established their own application deadlines and supplemental application requirements.

Please be aware that the decision to admit a graduate student is made by the individual academic department, not WMU’s admissions office. The individual department will send you written notification of the decision regarding your application.

Application Materials - The graduate admissions process at WMU involves two partners: the Office of Admissions and the department which houses the graduate program of interest. All applicants must complete the University Graduate Application, which requires students Some application materials must be sent to both, although specific admission is granted by the academic department.

Here are the key pieces that you need to be aware of:

  1. WMU's Graduate Application
  2. Transcripts – Request official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attending. Send these to the attention of the Western Michigan University, Office of Admissions, 1903 W Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo MI 49008-5211
  3. Specific Program Requirements – most graduate programs will require you to submit supplemental materials directly to their department. Review their websites for specific information. These often--but not always--include:
    • Recommendation letters
    • Writing samples
    • Autobiographical sketch/resume/vitae
    • Admissions Test Scores – all doctoral (and some masters) programs at WMU require students to submit Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores. The Haworth College of Business requires the GMAT for all MBA and MSA applications. For all other masters programs, requirements vary and you should check with your specific program of interest.

Application Deadlines - Application deadlines vary by program, and not all programs admit students for all semesters. Please review the website of the program you are interested in for specific departmental application deadlines.

If you have any questions, contact your program of interest, or the Graduate College. We are happy to assist you.
