Meet the Members

Meet some of the Western Michigan University Student Health Advisory Council members.

Courtney Afton, dietetics major: I joined SHAC because I am passionate about staying active and being healthy in all aspects of life. I enjoy running, playing volleyball and traveling. Through SHAC I hope to promote healthy living to the staff, faculty and students at WMU.

Daniel Baker, biomedical sciences major: I plan to specialize in orthopedic surgery. In my spare time I enjoy playing basketball, football, and tennis. I joined SHAC for the opportunity to have a real impact on others and hopefully promote habits that will lead to healthier lives.

Stacy Bangert, interdisciplinary health services major: I am passionate about the healthcare field, wellness and medicine. I think that everybody should be educated, aware and share a responsibility for their personal health with their health care providers. I joined SHAC to raise awareness regarding healthy living and spread the word of what great resources, care and opportunities Sindecuse provides.

Lindsey Chinavare, exercise science major, business minor: I joined SHAC to be a part of a student organization that involved the things I am most passionate about, which are health and exercise. It's a great way to meet other students and it's an opportunity to network with the people who work in Sindecuse. In my spare time I like to run and I ran my first half marathon last year.

Kathryn Davis biomedical sciences major, chemistry and Spanish minors: I joined SHAC to assist in making our campus community healthier while seeing a side of the health care field with which I was not familiar. I enjoy running and cuddling with my dog while binge-watching my favorite shows on Netflix.

Adam Hartman, biomedical sciences major: I joined SHAC to get involved on campus and help make a difference with the campus community. In my spare time I enjoy hunting, fishing and anything outdoor-related.

Lexi Janego, exercise science major, holistic health minor: Aside from being a full time student, I also teach group fitness at the WMU Student Recreation Center. I enjoy maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle and I thought joining SHAC would be a great way to get involved and help improve the overall health of all students at WMU!

Mackenzie Larson, biology major, chemistry and philosophy minors: I am a goalkeeper on the WMU women's soccer team as well as a volunteer at a local hospital. I joined SHAC because of my interest in medicine and to be an advocate to the student body so we can make Western a healthier university.

Adam Roth, biomedical sciences major: In my spare time I like to go to restaurants and help out. As a student with ambitions of pursuing a career in health I felt that I would be a good participant in a group dedicated to advising WMU students to consider the health programs that Sindecuse has to offer.

Gabriella Tackett, biomedical sciences, chemistry and gerontology minors: I was a peer educator for Planned Parenthood of Jackson and served on the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative Board. I am a member of Alpha Chi Omega, WMU women’s rugby and serve as the president of SHAC and the WMU College Republicans. I joined SHAC because I wanted to stay involved in college and further my knowledge on sexual education.
