Building Facts & Information:                                    CHHS Building

  • The 195,000 sq. ft. building was finished in fall 2005 and houses all CHHS academic programs and some of the most sophisticated labs and classrooms in the nation.
  • It reflects the college’s key values – learning, teaching and research on one hand and sharing, communication and hospitality on the other hand.
  • Its three main sections are the bar across the center, the atrium, and the arc, which holds faculty and staff offices on the second, third, and fourth floors, and the winter garden, computer labs, and the learning resource center on the first floor.
  • Principles of sustainability were incorporated into the building design. It is high tech, state-of-the-art, and environmentally sensitive with elements that include renewable and sustainable material such as cork flooring and motion-activated lights, heating and cooling. • The bubbling stream around the staircase in the atrium is not only a beautiful part of the building’s architecture; it is also used as a guidance or reference point for persons with blindness and low vision.

Classrooms:

  • There are 18 classrooms.
  • Classroom 1010 is the largest classroom in the building, seating a little over a hundred people. It has the latest technology and has a large screen to project presentations and movies. The chairs in this room rotate for group work.

Laboratories:

  • The Wellness Lab is used by the holistic healthcare program. The floors are bamboo, and the area is open for teaching subjects such as yoga and meditation.
  • The Activities for Daily Living Lab is used primarily by the departments of Occupational Therapy and Blindness and Low Vision Studies. This area simulates a functional living area and is used to instruct students how to help people with disabilities.
  • The Clinical Skills Suite is used for the instruction of nursing students. Stryker Medical donated all beds, over-bed tables, and bed stands in the lab.
  • In the Physical Exam Skills Lab, there are 12 clinical skills lab exam tables. Physician Assistant students practice their exams skills here. Welch Allyn donated the wall mounted medical equipment.
  • The Patient Exam Laboratory will be the home of a simulated patient, which will come to the college as part of a grant for using simulation in education with the WMU College of Aviation. Students practice skills in the adjoining rooms and are taped and recorded.
  • The Human Anatomy Suite is a fully functioning, state of the art cadaver lab with video capabilities so that lessons and procedures involving cadavers can be viewed on nearby monitors during group work.
  • The Motion Analysis Lab is used primarily by the Departments of Occupational Therapy and Blindness and Low Vision Studies. A large area such as this is necessary in working with groups doing physical activities, such as goal ball, a sport played with no use of vision, in which sound is used to compete. The motion analysis room also offers a stunning view of the grounds and of campus, and will be used as a major conference and meeting room for the college..

Research

  • The fourth floor provides a great deal of research space for the Departments of Blindness and Low Vision Studies and Speech Pathology and Audiology. The college received a $1.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to build many of the research labs.
