About

The Ph.D. program in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences is designed for students who have an interest in interdisciplinary approaches to research and wish to pursue academic careers in higher education, enabling them to demonstrate excellence in the three traditional faculty functions of research, teaching, and service. The program also prepares students for leadership in nonacademic settings.

The program admits students as a cohort of approximately 12 students every other year (in even years) with no more than three representatives of any one discipline. It is designed to be accessible to working professionals who may be non-traditional students.

  • The courses are presented through distance technologies and intensive on-campus weekend and summer sessions in Kalamazoo.
  • The discipline-specific or skill-oriented cognate courses and some of the research courses may be taken at other accredited graduate institutions.
  • The teaching practicum may be conducted at another accredited institution.

The program is designed to be completed in four years and must be completed within seven years. In a typical program:

  • During the first two years, cohort members proceed through required academic coursework as a unit and complete their elective cognates.
  • During the third year, students complete the 4 comprehensive examination products.
  • During the fourth year, students complete the dissertation.
