Nickola Wolf Nelson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Program Director Dr. “Nicki” Nelson earned her doctor of philosophy degree at Wichita State University in 1973 in communication disorders and sciences. Nelson has been a member of the faculty at Western Michigan University since 1981 and Director of the PhD program in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences since 2004. She was named the Charles Van Riper Professor in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology for 2005-2008. Nelson’s research involves curriculum-relevant language assessment and intervention and working with doctoral students to extend interdisciplinary evidence-based interventions across populations and contexts. Nelson is the author of books, chapters, and articles on children with language disorders, including Childhood Language Disorders in Context: Infancy through Adolescence (2nd ed., 1998) and The Writing Lab Approach to Language Instruction and Intervention (Nelson, Bahr, & Van Meter, 2004). She has been the editor of Topics in Language Disorders (Lippincott, Williams, & Wilkins/ Wolters-Kluwer) since 2006. Amy B. Curtis, Ph.D., M.P.H., Associate Professor Dr. Curtis earned her A.B. degree from the University of Michigan in Anthropology and History in 1991 and M.P.H. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan in Epidemiologic Science in 1993 and 1997, respectively. Curtis has been a member of the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences program since 2005. Her research interests are in behavioral epidemiology and public health. Curtis is the Principal Investigator of a community-based research initiative entitled, Project IDEAS (Initiative for Diabetes Educational Advancement and Support), a diabetes education and support program for low-income African Americans and Latinos. Prior to coming to Western Michigan University, Dr. Curtis served as both an Epidemic Intelligence Officer and senior epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where her work focused on investigating outbreaks of tuberculosis, reducing healthcare-related infectious disease, developing hospital-based assessment tools, and improving public health practice and surveillance. She has published on a number of topics including infectious disease epidemiology, social determinants of health, hypertension, public health surveillance, and healthcare-associated infections.
