Competencies acquired by students

Five competencies were acquired through participation in specialized practicum experiences and coursework developed and/or enhanced for the LLDP project. The five competencies were:

  1. Using culturally sensitive methods including
    • Showing knowledge of diversity
    • Using skills in ethnographic interviewing
    • Involving families in the assessment and intervention process
  2. Conducting contextually relevant and nonbiased
    • Using contextually relevant assessment such as a computer based analysis of language samples, describing communicative and literacy contexts for families
    • Using nonbiased assessment methods such as dynamic assessment and test modification techniques
  3. Provide intervention to develop language and literacy
    • Providing intervention in oral and written modalities
    • Providing supporting information to parents regarding importance of literacy
    • Helping clients acquire self regulating executive strategies
  4. Using inclusive methods on collaborative and interdisciplinary teams
    • Collaborating with school personnel to develop emergent literacy programs
    • Collaborating with classroom teachers and reading professionals to support children with reading, writing, listening, and speaking difficulties.
  5. Demonstrate professionalism skills and strategies for life-long learning.
    • Reflecting on clinical skills through journaling and computer conferencing
    • Participating in professional meetings and working with faculty on research projects
    • Helping to organize workshops
    • Mentoring students from traditionally underrepresented communities
    • Participating in cultural simulation exercise
    • Participating in partnership projects with special educators
