Competencies acquired by students

Five competencies were acquired through participation in specialized practicum experiences and coursework developed and/or enhanced for the LLDP project. The five competencies were:
- Using culturally sensitive methods including
- Showing knowledge of diversity
- Using skills in ethnographic interviewing
- Involving families in the assessment and intervention process
- Conducting contextually relevant and nonbiased
- Using contextually relevant assessment such as a computer based analysis of language samples, describing communicative and literacy contexts for families
- Using nonbiased assessment methods such as dynamic assessment and test modification techniques
- Provide intervention to develop language and literacy
- Providing intervention in oral and written modalities
- Providing supporting information to parents regarding importance of literacy
- Helping clients acquire self regulating executive strategies
- Using inclusive methods on collaborative and interdisciplinary teams
- Collaborating with school personnel to develop emergent literacy programs
- Collaborating with classroom teachers and reading professionals to support children with reading, writing, listening, and speaking difficulties.
- Demonstrate professionalism skills and strategies for life-long learning.
- Reflecting on clinical skills through journaling and computer conferencing
- Participating in professional meetings and working with faculty on research projects
- Helping to organize workshops
- Mentoring students from traditionally underrepresented communities
- Participating in cultural simulation exercise
- Participating in partnership projects with special educators
