Secondary Education

Secondary education has long been one of the professional objectives of many history majors in American colleges and universities.  For students training for a career in secondary education, two circumstances in the contemporary job market will affect their professional life.  First, while teaching faculties at all levels are expected to experience unprecedented rates of retirement in the coming decades, there are many potential applicants for available jobs, and the job market will be extremely competitive.

The field of education itself, including history education, is also striving to develop new pedagogical strategies and is emphasizing increased academic rigor.  To meet these challenges, secondary education history majors must strive for excellence in course work, select courses to help develop a comprehensive content background in history, and maximize opportunities to develop pedagogical skills and experience in interpreting history for varied audiences.
