Graduate seminars and reading courses explore the writers and ideas operative in cathedral schools / universities and monasteries; saints lives as a medium for articulating and circulating popular, liturgical, and theological models; and the doctrinal and institutional development of medieval Christianity, west and east. Students are asked to learn to discern information by reading primary sources, in translation and in Latin, and to learn to find information by using published and on-line scholarly aids.

theology, spirituality, and institutions of the Cistercian
Order, especially during its formative period in the first
half of the twelfth century; monastic reform movements and
associations of reform-minded abbots contemporary with the
Cistercians; academic and monastic education.
