Undergraduate Presents at National Conference

ariellesmithArielle Smith, a secondary social studies major and history minor, recently presented a paper titled “The Infamous Question, Why?: Introducing Historiography into the Secondary Classroom,” at the National Council for History Education conference in Richmond, Virginia.  Professor Sarah Drake Brown from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, organized the session as part of a panel called “Preparing the Next Generation of History Teachers: Voices from the Field.”

Arielle represented Western Michigan University and was joined on the panel by pre-service social studies and history teachers from Illinois State University, Eastern Illinois University, and Ball State University.  Professor Richard Hughes from Illinois State University commented on the papers.

Arielle and the other students will now prepare their papers for publication in the International Journal for Social Education.  The journal is preparing a special issue on pre-service teaching issues.

Arielle's attendance at the conference was partially funded by the Emeriti Fellows Grant in the Department of History.
