Please join us on Wednesday, August 31 from 3:30 to 5pm at the Oaklands for a retirement reception to wish Brenda well. Light refreshments will be served.
The oldest of nine children, Brenda was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and moved to Battle Creek when she was two years old. Brenda graduated from Springfield schools and attended Kellogg and Kalamazoo Valley Community Colleges. Over the next several years, Brenda worked as an office manager and administrative assistant at several southwest Michigan locations, including Battle Creek schools and Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. Brenda came to Western in the fall of 1988, working in the Provost's office for two years before moving to the Dean's office in the College of Arts and Sciences. She joined the history department in August 2001, and will retire this summer with twenty-three years of service to WMU.
Brenda and her husband of thirty-three years, Nelson, have three children and six grandchildren. They have lived in Kalamazoo for more than twenty years. In retirement, Brenda hopes to spend more time with her grandchildren and to devote more time and energy to Restoration Ministries of South Haven, where Nelson has been the pastor since 2004. Among the projects they will work on together in the coming years, Brenda and Nelson hope to upgrade the computer services for the church, develop a local pantry, and create tutorial services.
Brenda has been a fixture in the Department of History for more than a decade. We will miss her many contributions and her good cheer, and we wish her and Nelson all the best in the years to come.
