Dr. Anna-Lisa Cox, a scholar-in-residence at Chicago’s Newberry Library, will present a reading and discussion based on her recent book, A Stronger Kinship: One Town’s Extraordinary Story of Hope and Faith (Little, Brown, 2006). Cox’s research shows how, starting in the 1860s, blacks and whites in the southwest Michigan community of Covert broke both the laws and the social expectations of 19 th century America to develop a community of racial equality. Her book traces this town’s unique racial history into the 20 th century, when its previous racial harmony deteriorated due to shifts in both population and social climate. Through her superb research and elegant writing, Cox presents an America that miraculously once was, and a vision for what our nation might one day be.
