To support faculty research, the Department of History and Office of Vice President for Research provide internal funding opportunities at Western. The U.S. government also supports foreign travel for research and teaching through the Fulbright Scholarship Program.
Burnham-Macmillan Research and Travel Support
Through the Burnham-Macmillan Endowment, originally established by Professor Emeritus Margaret Elizabeth Burnham-Macmillan in July 1974, History faculty members can apply for funding for travel to conferences. This fund will support travel to two authorized conferences; provide support to faculty members who are giving papers, presentations, or substantial commentary; and may extend support to officers of national professional organizations. Faculty should consult the Chair of the Department of travel plans early in the fiscal year and the Chair will inform the Burnham-Macmillan Committee of travel requests early in the fall semester. Faculty should finalize travel plans by January. In January, the Burnham-Macmillan Committee may consider travel requests reflecting unusual circumstances and cases will be handled on a case-by-case basis, influenced by budgetary considerations.
For more information, contact the Chair of the Burnham-Macmillan Committee or the Chair of the History Department.
