Exercise Science Program

Exercise Science Program
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Exercise Science
New Undergraduate Exercise Science Program Curriculum Information (Starting Fall 2010 Semester)
Summary of the Changes from the Old to New Program
Overall, there are three main categories of changes that we have made:
- The addition of chemistry, physics, and psychology to the "Required Cognates"
- A reorganization of the "Required Major" courses.
- The establishment of the "Personal Option Program (POP)" to allow students to more individualize their program.
Another major change is that the Exercise Science major will now be classified as a "Professional Program". Therefore, there will no longer be a required minor.
Changes to "Required Cognates" Courses
- Chemistry course(s) will be added:
- Students will choose between the two semester chemistry courses (CHEM 1100/1110 General Chemistry I and Lab and CHEM 1120/1130 General Chemistry II and Lab) (8 cr total) OR the one semester chemistry course (CHEM 1000 Introduction to Chemistry) (3 cr)
- The choice between the one and two semester chemistry courses will depend on the student's chosen career path.
- Physics course(s) will be added:
- Student will choose between the two semester physics courses (PHYS 1130/1140 General Physics I and Lab and PHYS 1150/1160 General Physics II and Lab) (10 cr total) OR the one semester physics course (PHYS 1070/1080 Elementary Physics and Lab) (5 cr).
- The choice between the one and two semester physics courses will depend on the student's chosen career path.
- An alternate course to HPER 1110 Healthy Living will be offered:
- Students will choose between HPER 1110 Healthy Living (2 cr) OR HOL 1000 Choices in Living (3 cr)
- A psychology course will be added:
- PSY 1000 General Psychology (3 cr)
The following required cognates that are part of the current program will be maintained:
- BIOS 1120/1100 Principles of Biology and Lab (4 cr)
- BIOS 2110 Human Anatomy (4 cr)
- BIOS 2400 Human Physiology (4 cr)
Changes to "Required Major" Courses
- The name of HPER 2950 will change from "Biomechanics" to "Functional Anatomy and Biomechanics"
- The name of HPER 3150 will change from "Measurement and Evaluation in HPER" to "Measurement, Evaluation, and Statistics in HPER"
- HPER 2960 Stress Management and Flexibility (2cr), HPER 3950 Cardiovascular Endurance: Aerobic Conditioning (2cr), and HPER 3960 Muscular Strength and Endurance (2cr) will be combined into a new 3 credit hour HPER 3960 course named "Principles of Strength and Conditioning"
- The name of HPER 3970 Body Composition/Weight Control will change to "Exercise and Sports Nutrition" and will increase from 2 to 3 credits.
- HPER 3170 Cardiovascular Health and HPER 4800 Basic Electrocardiography will be combined into a new HPER 4800 course named "Heart Disease and Rehabilitation". The new HPER 4800 course will be 3 credits. Also, the new HPER 4800 course will no longer be a required course.
- HPER 4690 Fitness Management will increase from 2 to 3 credits. Also, HPER 4690 will no longer be a required course.
- The name of HPER 4910 will change from "Exercise for Special Populations" to "Exercise Management for Chronic Diseases and Disorders
- Students will be able to choose between HPER 3500 Modifications of Health Behaviors and PSY 4630 Health Psychology.
- HPER 3800 Foundations of Sports Injuries will no longer be required. Instead, students will choose between HPER 1810 First Aid and HPER 3810 Instructor First Aid.
The Establishment of the "Personal Option Program (POP)"
The POP will be a list of courses from different departments across the university. Students will be able to select which courses they want to take. Student must earn at least 20 credits from the list of courses. This program will allow students to individualize their programs. "Advising" sheets based on different career paths will be available to help the students with their course choices.
