Effective Sept. 1, all students, faculty and staff with personal websites on the homepages server will be required to use SFTP to transfer files. For most file transfer programs this should be a simple change from FTP to SFTP. FileZilla is provided as a secure client and is documented and supported by the Help Desk.

New multi-layered login process will begin July 28

In an effort to reduce phishing attacks and to provide a more secure login process, the Office of Information Technology will roll out a new multi-layer login process that is double-screened and uses security images and words.

End of life scheduled for seldom used iTunes U at WMU

WMU is replacing the seldom used iTunes U at WMU with Techsmith Relay (formerly Camtasia Relay). The new service is fully integrated with Elearning making it easy for faculty to add videos to Elearning-based courses. Workshops and consultations are available.

Recommend BroncoNetID password change if used for eBay

Ebay announced a cyber attack that compromised their customer database. If you were using the same password for eBay as your Bronco NetID password, it is recommended that you change both passwords as soon as possible. Using your Bronco NetID password on other accounts leaves your personal data susceptible when or if the other account is hacked.

Microsoft announces Internet Explorer vulnerability

Microsoft is aware of limited, targeted attacks that attempt to exploit a vulnerability in Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. For now Information Technology is suggesting you use Chrome or Firefox.

Windows XP is no longer supported

As of April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer support and update Windows XP. Even though your Windows XP computer will continue to work, it could now become more vulnerable as security patches will no longer be available.

Due to the many phishing emails received by members of the WMU community, IT has published a new website. The new site contains actual phishing emails that have come in, as well as other useful information for keeping safe online.

Many of you have received a letter or an email from Adobe telling you your account information with them may have been compromised and asking that you change your password. This is valid, but this is also a prime opportunity for phishers to gain your information, so use caution.

WMU has been seeing an increasing number of phishing attempts. Phishing is when an email appears to be from a valid source and attempts to get you to click a link. The messages are not valid and if you click the link, you may compromise your computer and the University's network.

A new version has been installed for Windows XP, 7 and 8. Faculty and staff should login to gowmu.wmich.edu and select campus (WMU computers or off-campus (home computers) and follow the instructions for downloading and installing. Questions should be referred to the departmental LAN manager. If no departmental LAN manager, contact the Help Desk at (269) 387-4357, option 1.

Secure Wi-Fi now available in some campus locations

WMU Secure is now available in some, not all, campus locations. Once you configure your device to use it, it will show up as a wireless option. Secure Wi-Fi means your transmissions will be automatically encrypted.
