iTunes U was introduced in 2007 as a service to manage, distribute and control access to educational audio and video content. It provides two services under one name. The public service distributes media to the entire world. The faculty service automatically populates a faculty member's course site with students who are enrolled in that class, and provides a secure, private area for class work.
