Retroactive Credits in Foreign Languages

Retroactive Credits for Catalogue Year Before 2011

For students whose catalogue year precedes 2011, those doing a minor or major in the language may receive retroactive credits for previous work, subject to departmental approval. For a minor, students may receive up to 4 credits. For a major, they may receive up to 8 credits. Students should meet with their foreign language advisor to plan their course of study and discuss the possibility of retroactive credit.

New Retroactive Credit Policy for Catalogue Year 2011 or After

For students with a 2011-2012 catalogue year or later, we have a new policy regarding placement and retroactive credits. For most students, it is not necessary to have a major or minor in the language to apply for retroactive credit. Students take the placement test, enroll in the course at their level and, if they receive a "C" or better in approved courses, can apply for retroactive credit. Requirements vary according to language. Read more.

This policy applies to all students whose catalogue year at WMU is 2011 or after. Students whose catalogue year is before 2011 are considered to be under the previous policy.
