Statistical Sources Guide

Introduction

Statistics are collected, organized, and made available in a very wide range of subject areas. This guide was designed to provide quick access to select statistical sources that would be of use to students and faculty for research. Links to additional statistical sources can be found for specific disciplines by selecting a subject under Research - Subject Guides on the Library's home page.

ProQuest Statistical

Provides abstracts and indexes of statistical information from over 100,000 U.S. government publications from 1973, state and private sources from 1980, and approximately 2000 documents from international organizations from 1983. Also provides crosslinks with LexisNexis Statistical Datasets. Full text or web links provided for some citations.

Education


National Center for Education Statistics

Searchable site that includes statistics on all aspects of education in the United States.

World Bank Data Catalog

A listing of data sources available from the World Bank, covering
global issues such as finance, economics, education, and developing
countries. Some of the data can be searched by countries, indicators,
and time periods.

Government


FedStats

This clearinghouse provides links to statistics from over 70 US Federal agencies. Quick access to categories, such as crime agencies, and a keyword search engine allowing precise searches (e.g., "capital punishment") are provided.

Labor


Bureau of Labor Statistics

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is the principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics. The BLS is an independent national statistical agency that collects, processes, analyzes, and disseminates essential statistical data to the American public, the U.S. Congress, other Federal agencies, State and local governments, business, and labor.

Economics Numeric Data

Provides a list of links to economic data and statistices, compiled by Mansfield University (PA).

Stat-USA

A service of the US Department of Commerce for the US business, economic and trade community, providing information from the Federal government. "State of the Nation" contains current and historical economic and financial data, while "GLOBUS & NTDB" has current and historical international market research, trade opportunities, country analysis, and other trade information, including the National Trade Data Bank.

United Nations Statistics Division

Gathers, processes, and provides access to global statistical information, including economics data, in addition to developing standards for statistical activities. Free access is available for much of the data. Some resources require a paid subscription. A search engine and annotations are also provided.

Criminal Justice


Bureau of Justice Statistics

Constitutes the United States' primary source for a wide variety of statistics related to crime, criminal offenders, crime victims, and government justice systems. Periodic data and information is gathered from interviews and surveys of individuals and households, as well as thousands of agencies and institutions that are part of the justice system.

Federal Justice Statistics Resource Center

The Bureau of Justice Statistics Federal Justice Statistics Program database contains information about suspects and defendants processed in the federal criminal justice system.

American FactFinder

The U.S. Census Bureau provides population, housing, economic, and geographic data for the general public.

Census Bureau

U.S. government census data grouped into categories such as people, business, geography, and others. Data files are available as well as prepared tables.

County and City Data Book

HA 202 . A36 (Reference Desk Collection) This statistical guide covers not only places in the United States, but a broad range of subjects from agriculture and banking to veterans and vital statistics. Many of the statistics covered in this book result from the 2000 Census.

Health Statistics

National Center for Health Statistics

NCHS data systems include data on vital events as well as information on health status, lifestyle and exposure to unhealthy influences, the onset and diagnosis of illness and disability, and the use of health care. These data are used by policymakers in Congress and the Administration, by medical researchers, and by others in the health community. Posted reports and news releases also provide analysis of some of these statistics.

National Institute of Mental Health

NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This organization conducts research on mental disorders, and collects, analyzes, and disseminates information on the causes, occurrence, and treatment of mental illnesses.

State Health Facts Online

This site contains data on demographics, health, and health policy by state, including health coverage, access, financing, and state legislation.

International


Foreign and International Statistical Agencies and Information

This University of North Texas Libraries site provides links to many key resources containing statistics for countries around the world.

InfoNation

This United Nations database offers official and up-to-date information and statistics regarding the countries of the world. A search may be conducted in either a basic or an advanced mode.
