The display images are jpeg 2000 format which allows zooming in for greater detail. The collection is preserved in 400 ppi color and greyscale image capture done on a color calibrated flatbed LinoColor scanner with SilverFast software. The book, Everyman's House, is in pdf format for ease of searching and printing for research and scholarly purposes. For publication and commercial use further permission is required. The collection was digitized with the guidance of the Western States Digital Standards best practices and revised and updated in 2009 for greater interoperability.
The comprehensive information in the collection, called metadata, was created to aid users in better discovery of the resources. When viewing the metadata in ContentDM, the colored text are searchable terms for a quick search when clicked. In advanced search, cross-collection searching is the default with specific collecion searching available. When reviewing a search results list, note the 'refine your search' links on the left.
The metadata is qualified Dublin Core following the CDP Metadata Working Group Dublin Core Metadata Best Practices, version 2.1.1. The collection has been exposed for harvesting using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) and made available in WorldCat.org via the OCLC WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway.
The display system is ContentDM image database where the collection can be searched individually by using advanced search, or collectively with other Kalamazoo based collections from WMU. When zoomed in a red square appears on the thumbnail image to locate your view relative to the entire image. You can click, hold and drag to view another part of the iamge. Labels are contained along the bottom of the images for ease of reference and credit line referral.
The original digitization of the collection was completed under the Making of Modern Michigan grant in a statewide Michigan libraries history collection collaborative (link). It was LSTA funding through an Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant. Project work completed by the Digitization Center, and Technical Services Department of Western Michigan University Libraries.
