About Liturgy

Father Chrysogonus Waddell

A professed monk of Gethsemani Abbey in Trappist, Kentucky, Father Chrysogonus was an accomplished organist, a liturgical scholar, a composer and the founding editor of Liturgy OCSO. After the Second Vatican Council, he adapted traditional Cistercian chant to the vernacular liturgy and arranged antiphons and hymns for use at Gethsemani and other anglophone Cistercian houses.

He served as a consultant to the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL). Father Chrysogonus was also a respected scholar who presented his work at scholarly conferences here and abroad, and both contributed his expertise and encouraged young scholars at the annual Cistercian Studies Conference at Western Michigan University.

He published five books, more than 175 articles, and many introductions to the works of medieval Cistercian writers. In 2002, his colleagues and friends honored him by the publication of Praise No Less Than Charity, a Festschrift in his honor.

A bibliography of his work is published at Cistopedia
