PADM6860 State Agency Administration Guide

Overview

The resources listed here have been selected for the work you are doing in this class. They may also be helpful for future research in this program as well. This is by no means a complete list of resources you might need to consult. Please ask for assistance if you have any trouble locating information on your topic.

It is a good idea to keep track of key words and terms that retrieve relevant information. Keywords which work successfully in one source may or may not work well in another source. You may have to try multiple terms to find what you are looking for. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions. michele.behr@wmich.edu Phone:269-387-5611

Search Engines and Indexes

Google - Uncle Sam.

Another way of limiting web searches to .gov and .mil sections.

Comprehensive State Listings

These sources provide directories and links to multiple areas of information on the state of Michigan.

University of Michigan Government Documents Center

This University of Michigan Libraries' gateway offers a straightforward approach to navigating the overwhelming array of online government resources. Using frames, the Federal Documents section provides broad categories, such as the Federal budget and copyright, as well as an index covering over 100 topics, in an easy-to-digest format. The Foreign Governments and International sections link to documents by region, country, or topic (anthems, constitutions, or the military).

Librarian's Comment: The "Michigan State and Local Government on the web" section is a very comprehensive listing of relevant sources.

Michigan State Government

Gateway to Michigan government sites, particularly the executive, legislative, and Judicial branches of state government.

Librarian's Comment: This site has its own search engine, which unfortunately is not always very easy to use.

Library of Michigan

Part of the History, Arts & Libraries site for Michigan, includes information about the Michigan government, libraries, and services for the blind and physically handicapped.

Michigan Electronic Library: Michigan Law

Links to state courts at all levels, the Attorney General, Michigan Constitution, state statutes, administrative rules, and executive orders.

Librarian's Comment: Also includes current directories of Michigan legislators and committee assignments

Organizations and Associations

Governors

The National Governors Association provides information on governors past and present.

National Conference of State Legislatures

The National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the nation's 50 states, its commonwealths and territories.

Librarian's Comment: Click "Legal" to search state and federal court cases.

Librarian's Comment: Also a good source of information on non-profit organizations.
