Strategic Planning Directions and Strategies for 2011-2015

1. Attract, retain and develop an excellent staff in a workplace that fosters communication, innovation, respect, diversity, transparency and flexibility

Strategy 1.1: establish and follow standards to produce knowledgeable, helpful and efficient service that meets changing user expectations

Strategy 1.2: follow a set of values-based and WMU-compliant cultural norms to cultivate a constructive work environment and resolve conflict

Strategy 1.3: establish a central, prioritized collection of needed position descriptions containing skills required to help WMU achieve strategic goals

Strategy 1.4: establish a schedule of professional development events for all UL employees aligned with our directions, strategies, goals, and desired outcomes

Strategy 1.5: assess the UL work environment annually and act to transform suggestions into positive changes

Strategy 1.6: increase knowledge and cultivate new managers and leaders by documenting, communicating, cross-training and rotating leadership roles

2. Engage with the WMU community as our primary focus and collaborative partners to ensure that UL resources and services align with WMU’s vision and mission

Strategy 2.1: implement measures to address and resolve users’ prevalent, recurring issues and suggestions, and publicize resolved issues

Strategy 2.2: improve two-way communication between UL and all WMU academic units

Strategy 2.3: hold regular meetings with major constituent groups focused on implementation of UL and Academic Affairs strategic plans

Strategy 2.4: implement marketing and outreach activities at WMU constituent meetings and open events, based on WMU and international library calendars 

Strategy 2.5: obtain the funding, physical space, collections and human resources needed to support the WMU medical school

3. Provide state of the art facilities, technologies, expertise and services that allow users with diverse needs to effectively discover and create

Strategy 3.1: reimagine UL’s service points and user spaces for greater efficiency, and flexibility to support academic success at WMU

Strategy 3.2: maintain appropriate facilities and procedures to physically and digitally preserve materials in ways that foster active engagement

Strategy 3.3: emphasize interoperable, intuitive access to physical and online collections and services, based on an excellent user experience

Strategy 3.4: adopt emerging technologies and methodologies that anticipate an increasingly online future, streamline processes and reduce site-specific work

4. Build, support, curate, transform and preserve accessible collections of significant, diverse world-class information and unique cultural resources in a variety of formats

Strategy 4.1: collaborate with WMU faculty to maintain targeted, actively used collections that support WMU teaching, learning and research

Strategy 4.2: collect, preserve and facilitate access to WMU scholarship in various formats

Strategy 4.3: establish a WMU scholarly repository

Strategy 4.4: complete and implement preservation planning and procedures, with priorities based on uniqueness, condition, demand and use

Strategy 4.5: ensure responsible and appropriate rights management and stewardship of UL online collections

Strategy 4.6: maintain sustainably-sized tangible collections within UL, leveraging online formats, patron-driven acquisition, deselection and partnering opportunities

5. Promote and lead WMU’s awareness of and commitment to information literacy and evolving scholarly communication models

Strategy 5.1: direct and apply UL and WMU resources to integrate information literacy across the curriculum

Strategy 5.2: use a variety of face-to-face and online methods to consistently and continually assess information literacy competency and instruction at WMU

Strategy 5.3: devote staff and technology toward just in time, location-independent, consultative, embedded, and/or asynchronous teaching

Strategy 5.4: increase the proportion of courses that demonstrably assess how well research instruction helps students achieve appropriate learning outcomes

Strategy 5.5: educate the WMU community about ethical and legal information use, copyright and open access publishing

6. Incorporate user-focused, data-driven decision-making, evaluation, assessment, and accountability routinely and consistently into the UL culture

Strategy 6.1: establish a standing assessment team to track measurable progress toward goals and desired outcomes, contribute to UL annual reports, and administer future UL assessments

Strategy 6.2: establish success criteria and baseline measures for all program areas, to monitor progress and inform appropriate resource allocation

Strategy 6.3: establish a project management process that records functional requirements, desired outcomes, risks, implementation timelines and success measures

Strategy 6.4: produce an annual UL report for open distribution that reports progress on UL strategic directions, new initiatives, and emerging trends

7. Develop, implement, and advance practices, procedures, expertise and original scholarship in alignment with the Association of Research Libraries

Strategy 7.1: promote scholarship and research dissemination by members of University Libraries

Strategy 7.2:  establish regular discussions of emerging trends, developments and practices in research libraries

Strategy 7.3: create an environment that promotes and rewards experimentation and innovation with assessable criteria for continuation

Strategy 7.4: adopt an agile methodology and funding model for fast-tracking new services and systems

Strategy 7.5: seek the support of current and potential donors for identified initiatives
