The collection has original manuscripts and illustrations by more than 1,200 authors and illustrators, and more than 70,000 children's books published since 1530.
Dime Novels and Penny Dreadfuls
This collection of dime novels and penny dreadfuls is hosted by Stanford University and consists of over 8,000 individual items; it includes long runs of the major dime novel series (Frank Leslie's Boys of America, Happy Days, Beadle's New York Dime Library, etc.) and equally strong holdings of story papers like the New York Ledger and Saturday Night. There are 10 digitized dime novels one can read online.
Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art
Located adjacent to Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, "the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art is the first full-scale museum in America devoted to national and international picture book art, conceived and built with the aim of celebrating the art that we are first exposed to as children."
Mazza Museum: International Art from Picture Books
Founded in 1982 and located at the University of Findlay in Ohio, the mission of the Mazza Museum is to "promote literacy by providing educational programs for children and adults...utilizing its preeminent collection of original art from children's books." The museum owns original art by a representative group of children's authors and illustrators.
National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature
This museum opened its doors in 2002 in Abiline, Texas, and its mission is to promote literacy and to increase appreciation of picture book art. Collections of works by particular artists are on display for several months at a time, while other exhibits tour the nation's museums, libraries and universities.
Northeast Children's Literature Collection
Part of the University of Connecticut in Storrs, this collection contains books, illustrations, manuscripts, correspondence and artifacts relating to children's literature. Its purpose is make available historically and artistically significant works of children's literature.
