Note: In addition to the following titles, an uncataloged collection of gazetteers of numerous countries of the world is available in the Map and Atlas Room on the third floor of Waldo Library. These gazetteers were published by the old Defense Mapping Agency and serve as indexes to the various map series published by the DMA.

Columbia Gazetteer of the World

G 103.5 .C65x (Ref)
This three volume set is one of the largest gazetteers ever published. Entries contain population figures, pronunciation, and coordinates.

Merriam-Webster's Geographical Dictionary

G 103.5 .W42 1997 (Ref)
This is the standard, one-volume gazetteer. It is known for providing information on pronunciation. This is the gazetteer most likely to be found in a personal reference collection. The 2007 edition of this title is available online.

Place Names on the Internet

A gateway to place name resources on the Internet maintained by the Libraries at Arizona State University.

US Gazetteer

A database of place names from the Census Bureau's TIGER files. Separate files are available for 1990 and 2000.

USGS Mapping Information: GNIS Data Base Query Form

The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a comprehensive database provided by the United States Geographical Survey.

GEOnet Names Server (GNS)

This is an index to the numerous maps of the NIMA and as such provides coordinates and identifies which JOG (Joint Operations Graphic) the place can be found on. Covers the world with the exclusion of the United States and Antarctica.
