Locating Journal Articles

To locate research articles found in scholarly journals or popular magazines, use an index to periodicals in the discipline or a general periodical index. The most important index for the field of philosophy is The Philosopher's Index.

Selected disciplinary indexes are noted below,e.g.,Humanities Abstracts. See the Subject Guide to your discipline for additional article indexes.

Philosopher's Index restricted

Indexes and abstracts journal articles, books, and other publications on philosophy covering ethics, aesthetics, social philosophy, political philosophy, epistemology, metaphysics, and logic as well as the philosophy of law, religion, science, history, education, and language. Coverage: 1940-date. Updated quarterly.

Other Philosophy Article Indexes

Other "related to philosophy" research article indexes are the Arts and Humanities Search (AHSearch), ATLA Religion, the Humanities Abstracts, the Humanities and Social Sciences Index Retrospective: 1907-1984, and the arts and humanities section of Web of Science. To access these five journal indexes, or other indexes that cover a discipline, either click on the link below or select from the Databases A-Z listing the alphabetical letter that begins the index title that you wish to search. Then scroll down to the title and click on the link; for example, find the Web of Science under the "W" in the A-Z listing of databases.

ATLA Religion restricted

Index to 1.7 million citations to journals and edited books as well as book reviews in the field of religious studies. Coverage from 1908 to the present, with selected records back to 1818. Full text is provided for more than 285,300 electronic articles  Updated twice a year.

Arts and Humanities Search restricted

(FirstSearch) Indexes articles from over 1,300 arts and humanities journals and selectively covers relevant articles from over 5,800 social science and science journals. Coverage is from 1980 to the present. Updated weekly. See also the Arts and Humanities Citation Index.

Humanities Abstracts restricted

Indexes more than 465 major humanities journals in art, history, literature, philosophy, religion, music, and related areas. Coverage from 1984, abstracts from 1994 to the present.

Humanities and Social Sciences Index Retrospective restricted

Indexes core journals published in the 20th century in North America and Europe. Coverage 1907-1984.

Contains three major databases: (1) Science Citation Index Expanded (1900-present), (2) Social Sciences Citation Index (1956-present), and (3) Arts & Humanities Citation Index (1975-present). Cited Ref. Search allows users to search for articles that cite a particular author or work.Tutorial

Locating Articles on the Philosophy of a Specific Discipline

If you are seeking the philosophy of a specific discipline, e.g., business, education, a social science, then you should select that topic from the Subject Guides found under Research on the home page. Once you select a subject link, e.g., Communication, the title and description of each available index/database will appear, with other types of sources in the right-hand column.

InfoTrac General OneFile restricted

Indexes news and periodical articles on a wide variety of topics. Millions of articles are full-text. Coverage: 1980-present.

ProQuest Research Library restricted

Indexes popular magazines, scholarly journals, newspapers and trade publications in a wide range of subject areas, including business, education, humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Full-text available for over 2,500 journals. Coverage from 1971.

General Indexes That Include Philosophy Articles

Indexes include articles dealing with aspects of philosophy. Three of the most popular are: OmniFile Full Text Select (full text), ProQuest Research Library (selected full text), and InfoTrac General OneFile (selected full text); all three are linked below or found alphabetically by title in the Databases A-Z listing.

OmniFile Full Text Select restricted

Index to full text articles in science, humanities, social sciences, education and business. The index includes records from: Readers' Guide Abstracts, Social Sciences Abstracts, Humanities Abstracts, General Science Abstracts and Wilson Business Abstracts. Coverage: 1994 to the present. Updated weekly.

Journal Finder (Find It @ WMU)

Find electronic and print journals available at WMU. Search for a journal title, browse journals by subject or collection, or look for a specific article if you have a citation (CitationLinker).

Full Text Online Journal Access

In all of the above online databases, you may find direct links to the full text of the citation or a Find it @ WMU link that will show online and print locations as well as a direct link to Interlibrary Loan if the University Libraries does not have the article online or in print.

You can check journal titles for full text coverage by going to the Journal Finder link below and typing in the name of the journal. If it is available in print or online, years of coverage are noted, and clicking on the title will provide access. In some cases, recent years are not provided in full text online, but you may find a print copy in the Libraries.

In addition, two journal collections, ProjectMuse and JSTOR, provide search access to full text journals that contain many articles related to philosophy.

Project Muse restricted

Project MUSE offers more than 400 journal titles from several scholarly publishers in the fields of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, economics, and others.

JSTOR restricted

Full-text access to selected scholarly journals in a number of humanities and social sciences disciplines. Search by individual title or in the whole collection. This database contains only back issues and does not include issues of the most recent 3 to 5 years.
