The sources listed here are, for the most part, free World Wide Web sites offering useful information for the Department of Comparative Religion faculty and students as opposed to the Web-based databases which the Libraries license.



Academic Information:Religion

This comprehensive Web site indexes a variety of academic sites for the study of religion, including directories, indexes, libraries, academic departments, societies, centers, and associations.

Acta Sanctorum restricted

Contains the complete texts, which were published between 1656 and 1940, of all the lives of the ancient, medieval and modern saints. Serves as an electronic index for 68 volumes of saints' lives. This subscription is limited to four simultaneous users. Please logout when finished.

Department of Comparative Religion at WMU

The departmental WMU page links to a major Web site titled "Why Study Religion" that is sponsored and developed by the American Academy of Religion, and was funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. The site address such questions a Why Study Religion? Where do I Start? and What Will I Study?

Gateway to Sikhism

Links to Sikh scriptures, history, way of life and related subjects. Includes its own search engine.

Hindu Universe

Provides links to 17,000 sites about Hindu culture and religion, distinguishing among scriptures, philosophy, customs, history, and interfaith relations.

Internet Journal of Religion

This electronic journal has no print equivalent. It is a free electronic resource, to be used by itself or in conjunction with other scholarly resources.

Internet Sacred Text Archive

Provides, in addition to religious texts, texts from mythology, folklore, legend, and occult subjects. There are 46 categories, including, for example, "The Age of Reason," which provides full-text of writings by freethinkers such as Thomas Paine, Charles Darwin, and Mark Twain.

In the First Person: Index to Letters, Diaries, Oral Histories, and Other Personal Narratives restricted

This index lets users perform searches within letters, diaries, oral histories, memoirs, and autobiographies that are freely available on the Web and in Alexander Street databases. Users can access thousands of personal narratives in English from archives and repositories everywhere. Includes links to full text, audio, and video whenever available.

Islam Page

This site provides the full-text of the Qur'an in 20 different languages, tools for searching the text, links to Muslim beliefs, Islamic history and related subjects.

Jainism: Jain Principles, Tradition, and Practices

Links in ten categories, including Jain texts, images, pilgrimages, and organizations.

Judaism and Jewish Resources

From the table of contents links lead to a great variety of resources about Jewish culture, history and religion.
