For journal articles, reports, and other types of material you will need to use other indexes and databases. Selecting the appropriate index or database is an important step in locating the information you need. The two databases that offer the best starting points are Applied Science and Technology Abstracts and EI Compendex. There are a number of additional databases that you may want to use that cover a variety of aspects of aviation. A number of these are listed and described below.



AIAA Electronic Library restricted

This searchable database provides access to AIAA Meeting Papers from 1963 to present and nine AIAA Journals.

  • Journal of Energy
  • Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics
  • Journal of Hydronautics

Journal coverage dates from the first volume of each title.

Applied Science Abstracts restricted

Basic undergraduate engineering database. It covers only English-language journals, no conferences. WMU libraries own about 60% of the titles indexed. Good first choice for engineering/technology. Coverage: 1983-present.

Ei Compendex restricted

The most comprehensive index for scholarly research in engineering and applied science. Includes conference papers and foreign language material. Coverage 1969-present, updated weekly.
Available through Engineering Village 2.


INSPEC restricted

Indexes scientific and technical journals in physics, electrical engineering, electronics, communications, control engineering, computers and computing, and information technology. Coverage: 1969-present. Updated weekly.

Ergonomics Abstracts Online restricted

Index with abstracts of over 400 journals and other publications in all aspects of ergonomics and human factor engineering. Coverage: 1985-present. Updated 4 times a year.

Science Direct restricted

Database for scientific research that contains the citations and abstracts of more than 1,800 Elsevier journals in the life, physical, medical, technical, and social sciences as well as selected full text articles. Science Direct can be searched as a database or browsed by individual title. Coverage varies.

LexisNexis Academic restricted

Indexes thousands of domestic and foreign newspapers, as well as journals, and other publications in News, Business company reports and articles, Legal Research, Medical and Reference. The legal research category includes law reviews, law news, federal and state laws and cases. Mostly full text. Includes Hoover's full text. Coverage dates vary.

InfoTrac General Reference Center Gold restricted

An index of general interest articles from magazines, newspapers, and reference books on all subjects. Many entries provide full-text and images. Coverage: 1980-present.

General Business File ASAP restricted

An index of business publications that includes trade publications, newspapers, journals, broker research reports, and company profiles, some articles with full text and images. Coverage 1980 - present.

Health and Wellness Resource Center restricted

An index to articles as well as information from a variety of reference sources. Includes links to medical encyclopedias, a dictionary, drug and herb finder, health organization directory, and some newspapers. Coverage 1980-present. Updated daily.

PAIS International (Public Affairs Information Service) restricted

Indexes articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, research reports, statistical directories, and more about public affairs worldwide. Coverage is from 1914 and is updated monthly.

Web of Science restricted

Contains three major databases: (1) Science Citation Index Expanded (1900-present), (2) Social Sciences Citation Index (1956-present), and (3) Arts & Humanities Citation Index (1975-present). Cited Ref. Search allows users to search for articles that cite a particular author or work.Tutorial
