This collection was donated to the library by Prof. Edward Callan (WMU Distinguished University Professor Emeritus, 1995), a bibliographer of the works of Alan Paton. It includes correspondence between Alan Paton, Paton's family, and Edward Callan from 1966 - 1996.
Apart from being a bibliographer, Edward Callan also wrote critical studies of Paton's works. Edward Callan compiled several bibliographies on Paton's work such as Alan Paton (New York: Twain Publisher, 1968), a revised edition of Alan Paton (Boston: Twain Publishers, 1970), and a bibliography of Alan Paton in German entitled: Alan Paton (Hamburger Bibliographien) (Hamburg: H. Christians, 1970) .
Paton was a South African writer (1903-1988) born in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, on the east side of South Africa. He is renowned for the novels: Cry, he Beloved Country (1948), and Apartheid and the Archbishop: The Life and Times of Geoffrey Clayton, Archbishop of Cape Town (1974).
