Dr. Gambino's teaching, research, and consulting interests are in the management and marketing of the food distribution system, category management and applications of business technology, and sales training. In 1999, Gambino was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award at WMU.

Prior to joining the WMU faculty, Gambino spent 15 years in the food retailing industry. His experiences in corporate merchandising included responsibilities for promotion, purchasing, pricing, and retail operations. He also served on a corporate task force examining factors contributing to retail shrink.

Gambino has remained active within the food industry at both the national and regional level. He is a frequent speaker and trainer, and has worked with a diverse group of industry organizations. Gambino has been the master of ceremony since 2001 for the Creative Choice Awards held in Las Vegas. He also has been an annual judge for both the Creative Choice Awards and Golden Penguin Awards which nationally recognize companies' merchandising and marketing efforts within the food and consumer package goods industries.

He serves on the Board of Directors for Spartan Stores in Grand Rapids, a Fortune 500 company, and the Retail Site Development Advisory Committee for Wakefern Food Corporation's Board of Directors of Elizabeth, New Jersey. He is secretary to the Western Michigan University Food Industry Advisory Board, and a member of the WMU Faculty Senate. Gambino's background includes being a past member of the board of directors to Alliance Foods and the Food Distribution Research Society. He has served on several national and regional advisory groups including the National Grocers Association's (NGA) National Skills Standards Coalition, the NGA University Coalition, the NGA Entrepreneurial Institute Advisory group, the Food Marketing Institute's Educators Consortium, the Southwest Michigan Regional Edge Food Consortium, and the IRI Apollo Space Management Product Advisory Group.
