Academic Component

The Upward Bound staff work with student to ensure their success through our Saturday Academy program, tutoring sessions, and one-on-one assessments throughout the school year. Through our academic year program, students will receive academic help from our tutors, college admission exams practice, and assistance in completing college entrance and financial aid applications.

It is our desire that by exposing the Upward Bound students to new academic, social, and cultural learning experiences that they will acquire and maintain a positive attitude towards learning and post-secondary education. We encourage that you and your students take full advantage of the Upward Bound program along with its opportunities and support services.

Saturday Academies

The Saturday Academies are designed to support our students outside of their high schools. Students will attend seminars catering to their pre-college preparation needs, go on college visits, and be exposed to a range of programs and cultural events. UB students will be required to attend these dates in order to remain in the academic year program. The time frame for these academies normally will range between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Tutoring/Study Sessions

Tutoring sessions will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 to 5 p.m. for Loy Norrix High School students, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 to 5 p.m. for Kalamazoo Central High School students. Students who face academic difficulty are encouraged to take full advantage of these days; however, all students who are below the UB standard GPA guidelines will be required to attend the mandatory number of tutoring and study hours per week. Students in sports and other after-school programs should talk with the UB staff.
