Instructions:
Rhythms are tapped into InTactus using the keyboard on your computer. To begin, select your desired tempo by dragging the Tempo box up or down (or entering a number directly) and turning on the metronome (click button or press [m] key). For one-part rhythms, use the [spacebar]; for two-part rhythms use the [spacebar] for the top line and either the [z] or [return] key for the bottom (depending on whether the left or right hand is playing the bottom).
InTactus will calculate the length of each note you tap as a percentage of the beat and will display the closest durational value in the adjacent box. You may specify the type of beat unit (simple or compound) and the level of precision for the displayed note values. At the default level, the notes will be displayed to the nearest 16th note and will have a wide threshold of accuracy. For example, anything between 38% to 62% will count as an eighth note in simple time (i.e., half of the beat). For comparison, at the 32nd-note level, you would need an accuracy between 44% to 56% for the same eighth note.
After you have tapped in a rhythm, you may play your performance back with the metronome to hear for yourself how well you are keeping in time. You may listen to the top or bottom parts separately or together. Please note that since each box represents a single note and all boxes are the same size, two-part rhythms will not visually line up proportionately with one another.
