Many WMU offices closed during holiday recess

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Except for essential and emergency services, Western Michigan University will be closed beginning Thursday, Dec. 25, and will reopen Monday, Jan. 5. Holiday recess begins with the end of fall semester Dec. 13, and some campus services will close or have reduced hours starting Dec. 13 through the start of spring semester.

The campus closure applies to non-represented University employees. Many represented employees have contractually scheduled regular work days between Wednesday, Dec. 24, and Monday, Jan. 5. Represented employees should direct questions to their management.

Public events on campus during the holiday closure include Bronco men’s basketball games Dec. 30 and Jan. 2 and a women's basketball game Jan. 3, all at University Arena. Visit the events calendar for up-to-date listings.

  • Residence halls reopen at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10.
  • Spring semester begins at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12.

Listed below are hours for selected University offices and services. Faculty, students and the public are encouraged to call ahead to make sure that a particular office on campus is open. For emergencies only, contact WMU Public Safety at (269) 387-5555.

Many offices, including Admissions, Bronco Express, financial aid, First-Year Experience programs, close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, and reopen Monday, Jan. 5.

All campus academic advising offices close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, and reopen Monday, Jan. 5.

Bernhard Center and Bronco Mall hours are available on the Bernhard Center website. All facilities and mall stores are on reduced hours Friday, Dec. 12, through Sunday, Jan. 11. The entire building is closed Sunday, Dec. 14, 20 and 21, and beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 4. The Bernhard Center is on reduced hours Jan. 5-11. All facilities and stores resume normal hours Monday, Jan. 12.

Campus computing

  • The Help Desk is closed Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 13-14; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 15-19; closed Dec. 20-21; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 22-24; closed Dec. 25-Jan. 4; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 5-9; and closed Jan. 10. The lab resumes normal hours at noon Sunday, Jan. 11.
  • The Mobile Help Desk is closed beginning Saturday, Dec. 13. It resumes normal hours at 8 p.m Sunday, Jan. 11.
  • Bernhard Computing Center in the Bronco Mall closes at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, and reopens at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12.
  • University Computing Center lab is closed Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 13-14; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 15-19; closed Dec. 20-21; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 22-24; closed Dec. 25-Jan. 4; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 5-9; and closed Jan. 10-11. The lab resumes normal hours at noon Sunday, Jan. 11.

Sindecuse Health Center hours are available on the center's website. The center, including the pharmacy, is closed Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 13-14; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 15-17; open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 18, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 19; closed Dec. 20-21; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 22-24; and closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 4. The pharmacy drive-up window is open until 5:30 p.m. on days the health center is open. The health center resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5. Medical emergencies should be referred to local hospitals or other health care providers.

Student Recreation Center hours are available on the center's website. It is open reduced hours 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 10-11; 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 12; closed Dec. 13-14; open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 15-19; open noon to 7 p.m. Dec. 20-21; open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 22-23; open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 24; closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 2; open noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 3-4; open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 5-9; open noon to 7 p.m. Jan. 10-11; and resumes normal hours at 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12.

Unified Clinics closes at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, and reopens Monday, Jan. 5. Behavioral Health Services is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 15-19; closed Dec. 20-21; open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 22-23; open 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 24; closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 4; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5. Waldo Library is open reduced hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 12; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 13; closed Dec. 14; open noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 15-19; closed Dec. 20-21; open noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 22-24; closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 4; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 5-9; closed Jan. 10-11; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12. To reduce energy costs during holiday recess and closure, temperature settings in most campus buildings will be reduced to no lower than 55 degrees. Vacant residence halls and classrooms will be set back beginning Dec. 13. Office spaces will be set back starting Dec. 25. All areas except classrooms will be back to the University set point by Jan. 5, when the University reopens. Classrooms will return to the University set point by Monday, Jan. 12.

Also to reduce costs, parking lots outside unoccupied buildings and student commuter lots will not be plowed during the recess and closure periods. All main campus roads and parking areas for on-campus events will continue to be cleared as usual.
