Trustees approve retirements of five faculty, four staff members

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—The retirements of five faculty members and four staff members were approved by the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees at its March 25 meeting.

Trustees also signed off on one promotion, two sabbatical leaves and the return of four administrators to the faculty.

Faculty retirements

All of the faculty members who are retiring are doing so with emeritus status. Their names, positions, years of continuous service and effective dates of retirement are:

  • Dr. Carol J. Crumbaugh, associate professor of teaching, learning and educational studies, 13 years, effective April 30, 2015 (change in retirement date).
  • Dr. Laurel A. Grotzinger, professor of librarianship, 51 years, effective June 30, 2015.
  • Dr. J. Donald Nelson, associate professor of computer science, 45 years, effective Dec. 31, 2015.
  • Jodie G. Palmer, faculty specialist II of teaching, learning and educational studies, 15 years, effective June 30, 2015.
  • Dr. Sylvia Roederer, professor of music, 26 years, effective June 30, 2017.

Staff retirements

  • Cynthia D. Jackson-Ekeledo, medical office associate, Sindecuse Health Center, 34 years, effective Feb. 28, 2015.
  • Nancy J. Salvaggio, medical records clerk, Sindecuse Health Center, 37 years, effective Feb. 28, 2015.
  • Jacqueline M. Schley, pharmacist, Sindecuse Health Center, 33 years, effective Feb. 28, 2015.
  • Gary L. Snell, custodian, Facilities Management-building custodial and support services, 37 years, effective March 31, 2015.

Promotion

  • Sunmin Lee, to assistant professor of family and consumer sciences, effective Jan. 26, 2015.

Sabbatical leaves

  • Dr. Katharine E. Cummings, professor of teaching, learning and educational studies, effective for spring 2015.
  • Dr. Alexander Enyedi, professor of biological sciences, effective for fall 2015.

Returns to faculty

  • Dr. Cathryn Bailey, from senior associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to professor of gender and women's studies, effective Jan. 31, 2015.
  • Dr. Katharine E. Cummings, from associate dean of the College of Education and Human Development to professor of teaching, learning and educational studies, effective April 27, 2015.
  • Dr. Alexander Enyedi, from assigned responsibilities to professor of biological sciences, effective July 1, 2015.
  • Dr. Edwin A. Martini, from associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to professor of history, effective Jan. 31, 2015.
